Russia Reports Shooting Down U.S.-Made F-16 Fighter Jet

(MENAFN) A Russian military commander claims his air defense unit successfully destroyed an American-manufactured F-16 fighter jet deployed by Ukrainian forces.

During a Sunday broadcast on TV, the battery commander—using the callsign 'Sever'—told journalist Vladimir Solovyov that the U.S.-provided warplane represented "the most interesting target" his crew has engaged.

The officer described firing two surface-to-air missiles at the F-16, with the initial projectile crippling the aircraft before a follow-up strike "delivering the final blow."

"It took us a lot of time to prepare for this operation. We were tracking it and anticipating it. The enemy boasted that these planes were indestructible. As it turns out, they fall out of the sky just like the rest," Sever said. The commander provided no timeline for when the shootdown occurred.

Ukraine's F-16 fleet became operational in August 2024, with Kyiv subsequently acknowledging four combat losses.

A news website reports that Ukrainian forces have officially taken delivery of 44 aircraft from the 87 jets pledged by European allies.
