U.S. Senator Seeks Intervention in Iran Internal Affairs

(MENAFN) Lindsey Graham, a prominent ally of US President Donald Trump, has issued threats of American interference in Iranian domestic matters, declaring assistance is imminent for anti-government demonstrators. The Islamic Republic has experienced widespread civil disorder since late December, with violent confrontations between protesters and state security forces claiming numerous lives.

Graham's statements arrive merely seven days following Washington's military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the seizure of President Nicolas Maduro, prompting political analysts to caution that subsequent actions could endanger numerous nations spanning multiple regions.

In a Saturday post on X, Graham directly addressed Iranian protesters, stating "Help is on the way," echoing Trump's recent public declarations. This followed Trump's cryptic comments on Truth Social hours earlier, implying American readiness to intervene in Iran to advance the population's pursuit of "freedom."

"When President Trump says Make Iran Great Again, it means the protestors in Iran must prevail over the ayatollah," the senator declared. "That is the clearest signal yet that he, President Trump, understands Iran will never be great with the ayatollah and his henchmen in charge."

Saturday also saw Graham share imagery depicting himself alongside Trump displaying a 'Make Iran Great Again' cap aboard Air Force One. Trump initially deployed this slogan in June during Israel's intensive 12-day aerial offensive against Iran, suggesting "regime change" as a viable option if Tehran failed to "make Iran great again."

American military forces executed strikes against Iranian nuclear installations during that period in coordination with Israeli operations. Tehran retaliated with missile strikes on a US military installation in Qatar, producing zero casualties.

Mass demonstrations erupted across Iran on December 28 following a catastrophic national currency devaluation that triggered exponential increases in food and essential commodity costs. Protests rapidly intensified, with participants reportedly engaging in violent altercations with law enforcement and assaulting government facilities nationwide. Certain demonstrators have allegedly called for monarchical restoration. Authorities have implemented comprehensive internet and telecommunications blackouts countrywide.

The upheaval has resulted in over 200 fatalities, according to Time, citing a medical professional in the capital. A news agency has documented at least 25 civilian deaths attributed to rioters throughout the nation, while six security personnel have perished and an additional 120 sustained injuries in Fars province.

Iranian government officials have accused the US and Israel of orchestrating the civil unrest.
