Iran Signals Possible Diplomatic Progress in U.S. Talks

(MENAFN) A top aide to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has signaled that diplomatic progress between Tehran and Washington remains possible—but only if negotiations stay grounded in practical reality and steer clear of unrealistic ultimatums.

Ali Shamkhani, who serves as secretary of Iran's Defense Council, delivered the statement during a Friday-published interview, addressing the recently revived indirect atomic discussions between his nation and the United States. The opening session of these renewed negotiations took place in Oman on Feb. 6.

According to Shamkhani, all parties involved would benefit from avoiding actions or maneuvers that threaten the stability and security of West Asia—a course he characterized as both logical and sensible. He noted that regional diplomatic initiatives focus on lowering tensions and bolstering political resolutions.

Shamkhani drew a firm boundary around Iran's missile capabilities, declaring the program an untouchable red line excluded from any bargaining table. He issued a sharp warning: Tehran will deliver a "strong, decisive and appropriate" counterstrike to any hostile adventurism targeting the nation.

The senior adviser underscored that Israel lacks the capacity to launch strikes against Iran without backing from the U.S., while asserting that Iran's military preparedness stands at elevated levels—significantly increasing the price of any strategic miscalculation by adversaries.

These statements emerge against a backdrop of escalating friction between Tehran and Washington, coinciding with expanding U.S. military presence across the region, even as diplomatic channels remain active.
