During his time at Anfield, Nicol won four First Division titles, three FA Cups, a League Cup, and the European Cup in 1984. In 1989, he was named Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. He also earned 27 caps for Scotland and represented his country at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

Following his playing career, Nicol went on to build a successful second chapter in the United States, most notably as head coach of the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer (MLS).
