U.S. Air Force Pilot Receives Distinguished Flying Cross After Shielding Strike Package

ESSEN, Germany — A U.S. Air Force fighter pilot received the Distinguished Flying Cross, for their actions while deployed in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, during a ceremony in Essen, Germany, Sept. 22, 2026.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jason T. Hinds, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – U.S. Air Forces Africa commander, presented the medal and recognized the pilot’s combat leadership, airmanship and commitment to protecting the joint force during a mission within the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

“[They were] responsible not only for leading a formation, but for helping protect a package critical to the success of the operation,” Hinds said. “That responsibility required exceptional judgment, courage and trust in the team.”

The pilot led a U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor formation assigned to protect a strike package as they entered and exited contested airspace.

“For more than an hour, [they] remained focused on protecting teammates,” Hinds said. “Their actions helped give the strike package the time and freedom needed to accomplish its mission.”

Despite other challenging conditions including enemy threats, the pilot directed the aircraft formation, making critical decisions with limited time and little margin for error.

“[This Airman] understood the risk, acted decisively to protect the larger force, and ensured the formation could safely return,” Hinds said.

Congress authorized the Distinguished Flying Cross on July 2, 1926. The medal is awarded to U.S. service members for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. The achievement must be distinctly beyond routine operational performance.

“This medal represents more than a successful mission,” Hinds said. “It recognizes [an Airman] whose skill and courage, under the most demanding conditions, made a direct difference for the entire force.”

The ceremony served as a reminder of the readiness and teamwork required to generate combat airpower in contested environments.

“America’s Airmen are called upon to execute difficult missions around the world,” Hinds said. “This Airman’s actions represent the courage, professionalism and commitment that make those missions possible. It was my absolute honor to present the Distinguished Flying Cross to an outstanding American Airman."
